Last night, Games For Change, the nonprofit network for developers interested in creating serious (or educational) games, launched the Xbox 360 Games for Change Challenge with Microsoft, which asks college students to create educational games on global warming.
Building on the steady rise of environmentally focused initiatives that lead up to Live Earth on 7.7.7, the competition will be held across 100 countries and challenge college students. The competition is "...set to launch this summer to participants in more than 100 countries and will challenge college students to come up with the best game based on the theme of global warming," noted Jeff Bell, Corporate Vice President of Global Marketing for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business.
There will be cash prizes for teams of up to four people to win, but what makes competitions like this unique is the ability now to host the final games on Xbox Live. In the past, competitions like this could only be played online by a select group of individuals who wanted to play serious games. Now with most of the major game platforms having an online component, serious games have a totally new platform to present their work.
